Itineraries

Day 1

Arusha-Machame Gate

After breakfast, your guide and mountain crew will pick you up from your accommodation and drive you to Machame Gate at the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro (1,800m), where you’ll obtain climbing permits and register with search and rescue. Once formalities are complete, you’ll start your trek through lush rainforest vegetation toward Machame Camp at 3,010m. This initial 11 km hike takes 4-6 hours, winding through dense forest where rain showers are frequent, so keep your rain gear handy. Midway, you’ll pause for lunch before continuing upward. The gradient eases as the rainforest gives way to giant heather near camp. If evening clouds permit, you may catch your first glimpse of Kibo Peak’s glaciated dome. You'll enjoy your first night on Kilimanjaro beneath a starry sky, ready for the journey ahead on your six-day Machame climb.

Day 2

Machame Camp-Shira Camp

After breakfast, you’ll leave Machame Camp (3,010m) and embark on your trek to Shira Camp (3,845m), a journey of about 4–6 hours over 5 km. Today’s trail leads you out of the lush rainforest, revealing breathtaking views of the Shira Plateau stretching out before you. At the scenic Picnic Rock, you'll pause to enjoy sweeping views of the plateau and the impressive Kibo Peak. From here, the trail continues gradually upward to Shira Plateau, where you’ll camp near the famed Shira Cave. This spot offers some of Kilimanjaro’s most spectacular sights: the massive volcanic cone of Kibo, Shira’s unique rock formations, and, in the distance, Mt. Meru floating amidst the clouds.

Upon arrival at camp, you’ll rest and enjoy a well-deserved lunch. In the afternoon, you’ll embark on a brief acclimatization hike, gaining about 300m in altitude over 1–2 hours before returning to camp. Here, under a starlit sky, you’ll be served a hot dinner, preparing for the next day of your Kilimanjaro adventure.

Day 3

Shira-Barranco Camp

Today’s trek to Barranco Camp (3,960m) is filled with exciting ascents and descents, covering 11 km over 6–8 hours. You’ll start with a gentle morning ascent, leaving the moorland behind as you make your way towards the impressive Lava Tower (4,630m). Here, you’ll stop for about an hour to enjoy lunch and allow your body to acclimatize at this higher altitude. Afterward, you'll begin your descent into the scenic Barranco Valley, where towering cliffs offer breathtaking views of the plains stretching out below.

Arriving at Barranco Camp, you’ll be greeted by the dramatic sight of the famous Barranco Wall, a challenge awaiting you the next morning. You'll settle in for a hot dinner under the stars, surrounded by the rugged beauty of the valley, and rest up for the next stage of your adventure on the Machame Route.

Day 4

Barranco-Barafu Camp

The trek from Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp presents a significant challenge, as it covers 9 km over 8–10 hours. This demanding leg requires endurance, with several ascents and descents along the way, as you leave the lush Barranco Valley behind and transition into Kilimanjaro’s stark alpine desert.

Upon reaching Barafu Camp in the evening, you’ll be greeted with a warm dinner and a chance to rest for 4–6 hours before the ultimate ascent. Around midnight, you’ll embark on your journey to the summit, navigating the trails under a star-lit sky. This final push to Uhuru Peak, the roof of Africa, is a test of determination and strength, culminating in an unforgettable adventure that rewards you with breathtaking views and a profound sense of accomplishment.

Day 5

Karanga-Barafu Camp

After breakfast, you'll set out on the final push to Barafu Camp (4,640m), the staging point for your summit attempt later that night. Covering 6 km in 4–6 hours, this journey takes you through a stark yet beautiful alpine desert landscape, with expansive views along the way. Our team will have your camp set up in advance, so you can rest and relax upon arrival, conserving energy for the challenging ascent ahead.

Once you’ve regained some strength, you’ll go on a brief acclimatization hike to help your body adjust to the high altitude. Returning to Barafu Camp, you'll enjoy a hearty dinner and settle in for a few hours of rest. The summit attempt begins around midnight, as you embark on an unforgettable journey to the highest point in Africa, ready to complete your six-day Kilimanjaro adventure with a triumphant sunrise on Uhuru Peak.

Day 6

Barafu Camp-Mweka Gate

After a midnight start, you’ll begin the final ascent from Barafu Camp (4,673m) toward the Uhuru Peak (5,895m). The steep, winding path over scree and ice requires stamina and determination, but reaching the summit at sunrise is incredibly rewarding. You'll take in the breathtaking views and snap those unforgettable photos at the Roof of Africa before beginning the descent.

After a brief stop back at Barafu Camp for brunch, you'll continue down to Mweka Camp (3,068m), where you’ll enjoy a well-deserved rest. From here, a final descent through lush rainforest leads to Mweka Gate, where you'll receive certificates to commemorate your achievement. Congratulations on conquering Kilimanjaro! A transfer will take you back to Moshi for a warm shower and celebration.
